Our History

This winery, alma mater of P.D.O. Valtiendas, has been developed for years by the Martín de Andrés endarling family, originally from Sacramentia, a Segovian town that stands out for its wonderful lamb roasts and the wine of Bodegas Zarraguilla. The word Zarraguilla, which gives name to the winery, has long been the family’s nickname.

Zarraguilla is a winery with many years of tradition in the wine world. It’s nowadays known in both the national and international market, it’s a reference in the region and hopefully it will be so abroad.

Getting some bottles from the cellar, cooking a lamb in the adobe oven that Martín made with his own hands and enjoying the hospitality of the family.

Initially, there are four direct generations (grandfather Esteban Santiago, grandfather Venancio, Martín, and currently, their children) making wines for self-consumption, it was already in this last generation, with Venancio, that it was decided to develop the idea of making it bigger, more industrial.

It was in 1974 that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food recognized it as a production area, previously, back in 1850 it was beginning to be recognized. The grape with which one works, entered the zone thanks to the Cistercian monks of San Bernardo of the Monastery of Sacramenia, thus marking the origin of the grape, something fundamental for the history of this region.

.

What differentiates this from other areas is our altitude and the mineral soil, which is calcareous clay, and this makes it totally different, where we can see that the soil is of great importance for the vineyard and has a significant influence on the finished wine.

As for the range of wines, young people, we are manually selecting the productions, in terms of quantity and quality we have the pre-phylloxera vineyards, the old vineyards, we select them for reserve and author wines, in the case of the crianzas, vineyards of 40, 50 or 60 years old and for the youngest grape goes to the Manantial de Bodega bottle, which is young wine.

As Venancio says:
“SON PALABRAS MAYORES”
